Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers on what ProductGuard does, what it doesn't do, and why it exists.
Common misconceptions
Doesn't the FDA already approve my product?
For most cosmetics and supplements, no — the FDA doesn't pre-approve labels or formulas before they go to market. You're responsible for compliance from day one, and enforcement typically happens after a product is already selling. That gap is what ProductGuard helps brands review before publication or launch.
My supplier already tested this — isn't that enough?
Supplier testing usually covers formula safety and manufacturing quality, not label and marketing claim compliance. A product can be perfectly safe and still have FDA, FTC, or MoCRA oversights in the words on the packaging or listing page.
I'm a small seller — do these rules even apply to me?
Yes. Federal labeling and advertising law doesn't have a revenue or size exemption. Smaller sellers are less likely to be audited proactively, but marketplace-side automated screening and competitor complaints don't check your revenue first either.
Why this matters
What actually happens if a listing gets flagged?
Outcomes range from a marketplace pulling the listing, to a warning letter, to a full enforcement action — depending on the claim and the platform. The more common near-term risk is simply losing the listing while you sort it out, which costs sales and rank.
How likely is enforcement, really?
Historically, low for any single small listing. That's changing — marketplaces are rolling out their own AI-driven compliance screening at scale, which changes the odds of a flag from "unlikely" to "increasingly automated and continuous."
Everyone in my category makes claims like this — why would I get flagged?
Category norms don't change the underlying rule. Widespread oversights in a niche can mean the whole category is under-the-radar today, and a single enforcement sweep or marketplace policy update can catch many sellers at once.
Why it helps you grow
Isn't compliance just a cost center?
Compliance failures cost you listings, ad accounts, and trust. A clean label is also a channel unlocker — it's what lets you expand into stricter marketplaces, retail partnerships, and paid advertising placements that reject risky claims outright.
What if I think I'm already fine?
You might be. A ProductGuard review can help identify and prioritize potential issues in the materials you submit. It does not confirm regulatory compliance.
Pricing and access
How much does ProductGuard cost?
Plans depend on product volume, review requirements, and ongoing monitoring needs. Request access or contact ProductGuard to discuss the right setup.
Comparisons
How is this different from hiring a compliance consultant?
Consultants go deep on a single case, often with a longer turnaround. ProductGuard gives brands a consistent hybrid AI and human review of labels, listings, and claims, so more products can be reviewed before launch.
Can ProductGuard replace a lawyer?
No. ProductGuard does not provide legal advice or legal determinations. It reviews labels, listings, and marketing claims, organizes the findings, and gives the team a shared view of what deserves attention before launch.
How it works
Why did you build ProductGuard?
After reviewing real products across major marketplaces and identifying a recurring pattern of oversights sellers often missed, it became clear the gap wasn't awareness — it was speed and access. ProductGuard's review system was informed by extensive product and marketplace research.
What frameworks does ProductGuard screen against?
FDA labeling rules, FTC advertising and endorsement guidelines, MoCRA, DSHEA, FALCPA allergen disclosure, EPA FIFRA antimicrobial claims, FPLA net quantity, California Prop 65, CPSC children's product rules, and AAFCO for pet products — with coverage that continues to develop.
Using ProductGuard
What is ProductGuard?
ProductGuard is a hybrid AI and human product compliance review platform for CPG brands, including skincare, cosmetics, supplements, and other supported categories. It helps brands identify and prioritize potential issues in product labels, packaging, listings, advertising, and marketing claims before publication or launch.
What can ProductGuard review?
ProductGuard can review product labels, listing copy, packaging images, marketing claims, and ingredient declarations. Categories include cosmetic and skincare, dietary supplements, food and beverage, OTC drug and sunscreen, hair care, body care, and pet products. You can add optional context, such as a marketplace listing or an influencer post. The compliance guides discuss practical risk patterns, product positioning, evidence-sensitive claims, and labeling and marketing context.
How does a ProductGuard review work?
You submit product information, labels, listings, or marketing claims, choose a product category, and add context such as where the copy will appear. ProductGuard performs AI-powered analysis against relevant supported compliance frameworks, then organizes and prioritizes the findings. Human verification is part of the reviewed-report workflow. You receive actionable, human-reviewed findings. A preliminary automated scan is separate from that reviewed report.
What is human review?
Human verification is part of ProductGuard's reviewed-report workflow. Reviewers check findings, context, evidence, and priority before those findings are delivered. Preliminary automated scan results are separate and are not presented as human-verified.
What kinds of product claims can be screened?
The review covers claims on the materials you submit, including label statements, listing copy, and marketing or promotional wording. Relevant areas can include FDA, FTC, MoCRA, and INCI-related requirements where they apply. ProductGuard organizes those findings so your team can see what deserves attention before launch.
What file types or content should I prepare?
Prepare 1 to 4 JPG, PNG, or WEBP images, or one PDF up to 15MB, showing the label, listing, or packaging you want screened. Optional context can note where the copy appears, such as a marketplace listing or an influencer post.
How do access codes work?
ProductGuard scanning is available to approved brands and partners. Enter your access code to receive one complimentary automated scan. That result is preliminary and is separate from a human-reviewed report. After that scan is used, you can enter another access code if you have one. For additional product reviews, request a consultation.
What happens after a review?
You can reopen results later from scan history. A preliminary automated scan organizes findings for further review. A reviewed report is the deliverable in which those findings have been human-verified.
How is customer information handled?
ProductGuard collects the content you submit, the category you select, and the scan report. If you create an account, it collects your email address. A purchase may include payment confirmation details, not full card numbers. That information is used to generate your report and keep your scan history. ProductGuard does not sell your data. Service providers that support AI analysis, authentication, hosting, storage, security, analytics, and payments may process it to operate the service. You can request deletion by emailing hello@productguard.io. The privacy policy has the full explanation.
